Lamia Gargash: Documenting the Hidden Beauty of Emirati Homes in Dubai, Sharjah, and Ajman

Lamia Gargash grew up in the Al-Hamriya neighborhood in Deira, Dubai, and from an early age she was fascinated by arts and music, but her relationship with the lens was outside her experiences and calculations! She got a little close to photography by virtue of her studies, but the flame of passion was absent! The great ignition occurred when she visited her old grandparents’ house..and there the visual story began.

In an interview published by Gulf News newspaper, Lamia linked her old memories of her old, warm, harmonious society, in which parents, relatives, and neighbors shared the school, small shops, and most of the small details, with the present, which lacks the intimacy of society. Lamia was interested in documenting the homes of Emirati families in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman through stages, starting with the process of moving and then complete abandonment, including what is almost deserted, including houses containing residents about to move, or places that will be demolished soon. Lamia believes that every space, whether commercial or personal, evokes a sense of the human experience and should be celebrated.

Lamia prefers to use traditional film in Analogue photography, convinced of opposing the mainstream in favor of the comfort of working with the traditions of the past that she feels motivated. The newspaper described her with the words (her pictures look as if her lens is trained on deserted spaces). Lamia comments: I live my life through visuals.. Stories are formed in my mind as a series of images rather than texts. Documenting spaces is a true tribute to my home, my country, and my city, and a representation of human feelings and experiences. Dedicating my efforts to this type of documentation stems from memories and focus on the human narrative, allowing the viewer to dive into the details and the beautiful narrative hidden in them.

Lamia exhibits her work at the Third Line Gallery in Dubai, and has participated in dozens of local and international exhibitions and festivals, including the Venice Biennale and Galleria Marabini in Bologna, and her works are among the permanent collections of the Sharjah Art Foundation and the Barjeel Art Foundation.
