Lamers (vice-chairman of the Safety Region): ‘Two thirds of infections in the Rijnmond region with British corona variant’

The British variant of the corona virus currently accounts for two-thirds of all infections in the Rijnmond region. This was said by Cor Lamers, vice-chairman of the Rotterdam-Rijnmond Safety Region and mayor of Schiedam, on Radio Rijnmond on Tuesday evening.

“Our region has been in the top three of regions with the most infections for months,” says Lamers. “That has decreased slightly in recent weeks, but according to the latest figures we are growing slightly again. That means that our region must really be cautious and pay attention.”

“The appeal that Rutte made to every individual to really pay attention to the basic rules is not without reason”, Lamers continues after the corona press conference with outgoing Prime Minister Rutte and outgoing Minister of Health De Jonge.

“The number of people who still leave the house with a positive test is really getting too high. As a result, we have a higher infection rate. The English variant already accounts for two-thirds of all infections in the Rijnmond region. The risk we’ve been talking about for a few weeks is actually coming true.

Partly due to the call from outgoing Rutte to comply with the basic rules, the Safety Region will focus on providing more information about those rules in the coming period. “And where possible, we will discuss the measures with entrepreneurs from all municipalities in the region.”

Slight relaxations

Several light eases were announced at Tuesday night’s corona press conference. For example, most contact professions can return to work from Wednesday 3 March and team sports for young people and young adults up to the age of 26 will be allowed again. The secondary schools and MBOs will partly open again from Monday 1 March.

Lamers: “For many people that may not be enough, but when you realize that balancing is still on the verge of major risks, I think this is justified. The cabinet has looked for the valve to create some extra space, without that we run extra risks. That is why the curfew remains for the time being. “

“I understand the pressure from MKB-Nederland and the catering industry, but now I think it is still a bit too early for further relaxation.”
