Lamamra marks the strong presence of Algerian diplomacy in New York

NEW YORK – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra, marked the strong presence of Algerian diplomacy in New York through intense activities, bilateral meetings and high-level meetings aimed at strengthen African depth and reposition itself in a multipolar world, a ministry statement said on Saturday.

In addition to its participation in the work of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly (GA), which continues until September 27, Mr. Lamamra participated in three meetings on important themes such as energy, food systems and the Libyan crisis where Algerian diplomacy is working to help the Libyan brothers to achieve the expected political solution.

The Algerian foreign minister also had a series of bilateral meetings with his Russian, Ghanaian, Kenyan, Mexican, Cuban, Malian and Venezuelan counterparts, as well as with the Special Advisor to the President of the Republic of South Sudan.

On this occasion, Mr. Lamamra presented the Algerian experience in the field of energy and food security and reaffirmed Algeria’s support and solidarity with Libya within the framework of the high-level dialogue on energy in which he took part as representative of the President of the Republic.

He also reviewed the economic and social policies put in place by the government to ensure the availability of energy, particularly in gray areas, which policies have enabled electricity coverage to reach 98%. He also highlighted Algeria’s efforts at the regional and international level to provide energy to developing countries, in particular the energy program under the New Partnership for Africa’s Development ( NEPAD), the statement said.

During his speech at the Food Systems Summit, the Minister of Foreign Affairs spoke of the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic on the economies of countries around the world and its negative impact on efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, highlighting the measures and measures taken by the Algerian state to face the repercussions of the pandemic through a social policy encouraging the coverage of food needs from local production through the agricultural policy in place.

During his participation in the ministerial meeting on Libya, held at the initiative of the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Younes El-Menfi, for the presentation of the vision of the Libyan executive authorities for the acceleration of the realization of the deadlines provided for in the roadmap and the final settlement of the crisis, Mr. Lamamra reaffirmed the constant solidarity and permanent support of Algeria to Libya for the recovery of security and stability, the achievement of national reconciliation and the preservation of the sovereignty and unity of this brotherly country.

Intense bilateral talks in New York

On the sidelines of the work of the UN GA, Mr. Lamamra had numerous bilateral talks on ways and means to strengthen bilateral relations and consultation on regional and international issues. These meetings were an opportunity to reaffirm Algeria’s unwavering positions and its objective readings regarding the various developments both regionally and internationally, the press release said.

The head of Algerian diplomacy highlighted, in this regard, Algeria’s efforts to consolidate peace and security in Libya, Mali, Western Sahara and the Sahel-Saharan region, as well as its initiatives for building confidence between the parties concerned by the Renaissance Dam crisis.

In this context, Mr Lamamra met with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov. A meeting during which the two parties noted with great satisfaction the convergence of views and positions on the issues raised, reaffirming the common will of the management of the two countries to enshrine the strategic character of bilateral relations.

Mr. Lavrov reiterated, on this occasion, the invitation addressed by the Russian President, Vladimir Poutine, to the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to visit Moscow, saying he was ready to go to Algeria in consecration of the tradition of consultation and coordination between the two parties.

With his Ghanaian counterpart, Mr. Lamamra spoke of ways and means to breathe new life into bilateral relations and the main issues of peace and security in Africa in anticipation of Ghana’s accession to the Security Council, as a member.

Discussions between the two ministers also focused on the prospects for consolidating consultation and coordination between Algeria and ECOWAS on issues of common interest, in particular the situation in Mali.

With the Kenyan Minister of Foreign Affairs, the talks focused on bilateral relations and the security and political situation on the continent.

The two parties welcomed the exceptional level of cooperation between the two countries and the convergence of positions on the prospects for settling crises and in favor of just causes. The two ministers insisted on the need to support efforts aimed at preserving the unity of African rank.

The talks between Mr. Lamamra and his Mexican counterpart focused on the main items on the agenda of the current session of the GA, including the fight against the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic and the reform of the ‘UN.

The two sides exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest and Mexico’s constructive role in the Security Council.

In addition, privileged bilateral relations and the prospects for their promotion, particularly in the economic field, as well as on ways and means of strengthening cooperation in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, were at the center of the meeting of Mr. Lamamra with his Cuban counterpart.

The two parties reviewed the main developments in the regional and international situation within the framework of the tradition of consultation and coordination between Algeria and Cuba.

With his Malian counterpart, the Minister of Foreign Affairs discussed issues related to the peace and national reconciliation process in this brotherly country and the prospects of meeting the challenges relating to the transition period. The two parties also discussed developments at the regional level and the means of strengthening multilateral cooperation in the service of the objectives of stability and development in the Sahelo-Saharan region.

As for the meeting between the Algerian and Venezuelan foreign ministers, it focused on bilateral relations and the prospects for their promotion, as well as on a number of issues on the agenda of the GA of the UN, including the process of reforming the UN organization. During these talks, the two sides also discussed regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Mr. Lamamra, on the other hand, reviewed with the Special Advisor to the President of the Republic of South Sudan the relations between the two countries and the prospects for their development. The two sides also addressed the situation in the Horn of Africa region.
