Lamamra in New York: Algeria denounces a “rise of populism”

The Head of Algerian diplomacy Ramtane Lamamra, denounced hate speech, racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance. It was from New York that Lamamra spoke. The minister and diplomat represents Algeria at the ceremony celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Durban declaration.

Lamamra made a speech in which he states that “Algeria denounces the preponderant rise of populism which conveys hateful rhetoric and a discourse of rejection of the other”. Lamamra’s Speech also alludes to “Irresponsible attitude” of certain media which attack certain communities and religions.

Algeria takes a stand against violent extremism

Taking this opportunity, Lamamra indicated that Algeria strongly denounces “The irresponsible attitude of certain media which stigmatize and attack communities and religions accusing them of all evils, thus stoking hatred and feeding violent extremism”.

Lamamra affirms that Algeria knew how to stay “Faithful to the principles and values ​​which inspired its revolution and its policies at the national and international levels”. The head of diplomacy also underlined that the Algerian constitution enshrined the principle of non-discrimination between citizens.

Laws and devices laws that have been promulgated in Algeria aim to “Non-discrimination and equality between nationals and non-nationals before the law”, but also to “Prevent and fight against discrimination and hate speech, fight against the appearance of new forms of discrimination through social networks”, Lamamra emphasizes again.
