LaLiga Invades North America: Spanish Teams to Play Four Matches in Mexico and the United States

With the arrival of the UEFA Champions League final this weekend, the European soccer leagues end their season and are going to rest for a couple of months. But to the delight of football fans from the old continent, in August they will be able to enjoy four matches of Spanish teams in North America, thanks to LaLiga’s ambitious plan to “invade” Mexico and the United States.

It all starts in Guadalajara and Monterrey, in Mexico. When Sevilla FC faces Real Betis on the pitch of the Estadio Akron in La Perla Tapatía; while Atlético de Madrid and Real Sociedad will play the first European club game at the BBVA Stadium. Both duels on Wednesday, August 2.

And three days later the four teams will cross the border and land at the Oracle Park Stadium in San Francisco, California, where on Saturday, August 5, the Colchoneros will face Sevilla and Betis will do the same with Real.

For Hugo Sánchez, a Mexican soccer legend who played for both Atlético and Real Madrid, these friendlies cause him a bit of envy, since in his days as a player he did not even imagine that they could be organized and he assured via Zoom from the stadium headquarters of the second part of the Summer Tour that this will be a “show that will surely be very attractive to see up close.”

“This idea that LaLiga had to bring four teams with a high competitive level is very interesting, taking into account that the World Cup is approaching, both in Canada, the United States and Mexico,” he added.

For his part, Alejandro de Gabriel, delegate of LaLiga North America, revealed more information about the work that this competition has been doing since 2017, when it opened its first office in Mexico.

“It all started with Hugo Sánchez and from there LaLiga has been very followed, the Mexican fan participates a lot, consumes a lot of information from the competition and our job is to give back everything they have given us,” he commented.

“How do we do it? With a great television product and with the support of our local sponsors who carry out activations. In addition to our own content, we have a studio in Guadalajara where content is produced in the language of the Mexican fan. With information from the players that he follows, from the clubs, obviously his countrymen like César Montes, Andrés Guardado and Jesús ‘Tecatito’ Corona”.

For his part, Real Madrid’s pentapichichi, Hugo Sánchez, took advantage of the interaction with the media to publicize more information about the plans to “invade” the market in Mexico and the United States.

“The issue of the World Cup is coming up and therefore LaLiga is getting ahead of these initiatives to promote the Spanish competition. This does not happen to everyone, but to people who want to get a profit and benefit from promoting their product. That is something that we should have in Mexico,” he explained.

Finally, de Gabriel said that the office in North America is one more step in the approach to the Latino public of the continent. “We are going to organize more activations, massive festivals with fans like during El Clásico. The Summer Tour with four LaLiga teams. We want everyone to enjoy and we must take advantage of this unique opportunity for Spanish teams to come to Mexico and the United States. Something that had never been done.”

With the 2026 World Cup in sight, little by little we will see how there is more interest in soccer in North America, and at least at this moment the Spanish competition is the one that rules the roost, wanting to win over the fans and build the foundations of a relationship that lasts for years. LaLiga’s ambitious plan to “invade” Mexico and the United States is already underway and nothing will stop it.
