LaLiga Economic Report for the 2021/22 Season: Recovery from Covid and Growth in Income

LaLiga hThe economic report for the 2021/22 season has been presented. A campaign in which professional football clubs left behind the crisis caused by the Covid. That is what this report ensures, in which it is reflected that LaLiga practically recovered the figures at the level of income prior to the pandemic.

So, heThe total income for the 2021/22 season amounted to 4,838.1 million euros, which represents a growth of 22.6% compared to the 2020/21 season. The return of the public to the stadiums has been decisive for this increase in income. In fact, of all the total income, the greatest growth, with 123%, was from the matchday concept, the return of the public and the increase in capacity. Commercial revenues have also grown by 2.9%. Where LaLiga has not achieved the pre-Covid numbers has been in the transfer market.

Despite these good numbers, The aggregate net result of LaLiga stood at losses of 140.1 million euros. Lower losses than the previous year and which are much lower losses than the rest of the major European leagues. For example, the losses of the Premier and the Championsship reached 1,005 million euros.

Regarding the total expenses, The cost of the sports squad continues to be the highest item with 47%, although the report reflects the efforts of the clubs to contain costs. This report also reflects that there has been “less activity in the player market and this is having an impact on the sale price for transfers,” says the LaLiga report.

The report also highlights that net debt has grown by 0.8% compared to the previous year and stands at 2,102.4 million euros, including “the mobilized resources associated with the Impulse Plan, which are actually 50-year subordinated debt of the clubs, that is, basically their own funds,” specifies the LaLiga report.

A report that also explains that the aggregate EBITDA of the competition, both before and after the transfer results, was 23.9 million and 280.8 million euros, respectively. Figures that are far from the records of before the pandemic. On the other hand, the organic operating cash flow is once again positive, specifically 104.3 million euros. In this sense, LaLiga explains in its report that these figures “do not take into account the hundreds of millions of profits and the extraordinary financial resources obtained by Real Madrid and Barcelona as a result of their corporate asset monetization operations (ie sale of rights futures)”, explains the LaLiga report.

The employer’s forecasts for the 2022/23 season, to the current one, is that the growth in income will continue and that net profits will be registered again. The almost 5,000 million euros are expected to be repeated and LaLiga does not expect losses for this season and plans a profit of 27 million euros.
