LaLiga defends its agreement with CVC

FC Barcelona will stop earning 270 million and Real Madrid about 260 million as they are, together with Athletic, the only three LaLiga clubs that have not wanted to sign the agreement for the Liga Impulso project, signed by La Liga with the investment fund CVC by which the latter promised to inject 2,700 million into Spanish professional football clubs in the next three years in exchange for 10.5% of their audiovisual rights. When the three historic clubs resign, the amount that the 39 remaining clubs that make up the League will receive about 2,100 million euros.

The club that will receive the most money from this fund will be Atlético, a little more than 190 million. Espanyol will take about 80 million. 40% of these amounts will be paid this coming October, according to data from an information session held yesterday at the LaLiga headquarters in Madrid in which Óscar Mayo, executive director of the League and Juan Arbide of CVC participated.

CVC is an investment fund specialized in sports that has participated, among others, in Dorna for nine years and in Formula 1 for eleven years. It has local offices in Europe, America and Asia.

“The agreement is the fruit of ten months, in between living the Super League and other conflicts that have put it in danger,” Javier Tebas pointed out in August. According to the terms of the same, only 15% of said funds can be destined to the purchase of players to reinforce the squads. The transaction values the League at 24,250 million, which recognizes the League in market value only behind the Premier. The Italian Series A is valued at 17,000 euros.

The club management understands that Barelona and Madrid are not interested in promoting the Spanish League

70% of the money that reaches the clubs has to be invested in investments for the growth of the club: that is, from the reinforcement of infrastructures such as the remodeling of stadiums or sports cities (as Espanyol plans) or technological innovations. Likewise, it may also be used to cancel, if any, bankruptcy debt, or up to 15% of financial operations signed before the approval of these agreements.

LaLiga sources believe that Real Madrid and Barcelona did not sign the agreement because “they are not interested in promoting the Spanish League. Their support for the European Super League shows that both clubs are in other projects ”.

For LaLiga, Barcelona’s resignation from signing the agreement was a surprise. “We had about five meetings with them. The refusal of Real Madrid, on the other hand, was already waiting for it because for ten years it has systematically opposed everything that LaLiga raises, ”explains Óscar Mayo.

For May, the goal of the Impulse League is to be able to get closer to the Premier in 6-8 years. “The key is to empower the middle class of our League.” The CVC loan to the clubs is for 50 years, something that has not been understood by the opposition clubs either. Madrid defends that the LaLiga and CVC agreement is in practice an expropriation from the clubs of almost 11% of their audiovisual rights.

Atlético is the one that will receive the most, about 190 million, while Espanyol will take about 80 million

LaLiga entered 1,140 million for domestic audiovisual rights in its last signed contract. Barça takes 165 million of that amount and Madrid 156 million.
