Matchday 19 of LaLiga starts this Tuesday and on Wednesday there will be two key games. The current leader Real Madrid, with 45 points, receives Mallorca, fourteenth with 18 points, at the Santiago Bernabéu. Real Madrid will look to start 2024 with a victory.

It is a fantastic start to the year for the Whites, as they are starting as leaders, their coach Carlo Ancelotti received a contract extension until June 2026 and they have also advanced to the round of 16 in the current Champions League campaign.

The hosts are coming off a narrow victory over Alavés, with a header from Lucas Vázquez in stoppage time. They not only extended their unbeaten streak to 17 games in all competitions (14 wins, 3 draws) but also kept their ninth clean sheet of the La Liga season, one more than any other team in the division.

The bad news for the Bermellones is that their rival has won 10 of their 11 competitive games at the Santiago Bernabéu this season, including their last five home games. They also have the current leader of the LaLiga Pichichi table, Jude Bellingham, author of 13 goals so far.

Madrid will suffer the absences due to injury of Thibaut Courtois, David Alaba and Éder Militão; Meanwhile, Nacho will serve a one-game suspension. While Dani Carvajal and Vinícius Júnior will return to the team after recovering from their respective injuries, the Brazilian may have to settle for a place on the substitutes’ bench. For Mallorca, defender Martin Valjent and forward Vedat Muriqi remain injured.

Mallorca has proven to be a difficult team to beat in recent times – a streak of six games in all competitions (3 wins, 3 draws) with which Javier Aguirre’s team has moved five points away from the relegation zone in LaLiga–, but it will be difficult for them to extend their unbeaten streak on Wednesday. Madrid tends to shine at the Bernabéu and will want to show quality to win in its first outing of 2024. Now cross your fingers that in addition to its victory, Girona stumbles and remains the sole leader.

Girona will have the opportunity to at least keep up with Real Madrid at the top or become the sole leader again. On Wednesday, the co-leader — inferior to Real Madrid on goal difference — hosts Atlético de Madrid, which in turn leapfrogs Barcelona on goal difference into third place with 38 points.

The home team drew 1-1 against Real Betis on the last matchday, while the Colchoneros beat Sevilla by a narrow margin in their previous match.

Atlético de Madrid have a good recent record against Girona and have won three of the last eight games played between the two teams; the other five matches ended in a draw.

Atlético de Madrid have lost each of their last three away games in La Liga. However, they have a lethal weapon in Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman has scored 11 goals, tied for third place on the LaLiga scoring charts.

Much of the success of the Stubborn is due to the scoring talent of the Ukrainian Artem Dovbyk, who has scored 11 goals like Griezmann. Girona is the team that has scored the most goals in the first half of the season (42), although Argentine goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga has conceded half that amount (21) compared to the 11 that the less porous defense has allowed. Girona needs to triumph to continue fighting for the title and not to lose sight of Real Madrid.
