Lake Pátzcuaro, Michoacán faces a serious drought due to lack of rain and illegal water extraction, also known as “huachicoleo.” Due to the eroded soil of this body, you can practically reach the island of Janitzio on foot, as demonstrated by a video by the famous YouTuber “El Purepeche”.
In the clip released on April 11, the young man is seen walking across land where there was previously a body of water. The area looks deserted, you can see the ground with cracks due to its dryness and lack of humidity. The intention of “El Purepeche” was to reach the island of Janitzio on foot; However, a few kilometers after arriving, the terrain became muddy, which prevented him from continuing.

Lake Pátzcuaro dries up; You are almost walking to Janitzio
“On this side of the lake it is already dry, it is no longer necessary to pay for the boat, they should build a road so that they no longer have to pay 100 pesos for the boat, it is unfortunate to see this look like a desert, friends,” mentioned the content creator.
The YouTuber told the members of the local communities to divert water from the lake for agricultural and livestock use. The video shows the serious situation of the drought in Mexico and has caused great concern, since previously the only way to reach Janitzio was by boat due to the size of the lake.
The area of the lake documented by the young man was behind the monument to Morelos.
Lake Pátzcuaro: Water body in decline
A month ago, activists and experts warned about the erosion in Lake Pátzcuaro. Likewise, the locals denounce “huachicoleo” of water. On April 6, the government of Michoacán recognized that there are points where the highest number of water theft occurs in Lake Pátzcuaro:
- Janitzio
- Urandén Pier
- Puácuaro
- Oponguio
- San Jerónimo Purenchécuaro
- Chupícuaro
Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, governor of Michoacán, blamed avocado businessmen for being mainly responsible for the drought. Due to the situation, surveillance operations are carried out through patrols and the use of drones. According to the entity’s Public Security Secretariat, these actions have prevented the illegal theft of 600 thousand liters of water per day.
