Vice President Lai Ching-teh announced his candidacy for the Democratic Progressive Party chairman by-election, aiming for the presidential post of 2024, which can almost be said to be one of the party. Taoyuan Mayor Zheng Wencan, originally said who was interested in competing, also announced that he would not run for election and would fully support Lai Qingde, and Zhou Yukou, a media expert, praised Zheng Wencan’s decision as “wisdom and sophistication.” However, Xinke Taipei city councilor Zhan Weiyuan stressed that if Zheng Wencan cooperates with the British department in the future, he may become the biggest obstacle for Lai Qingde.
Zhan Weiyuan said on the 11 “Zheng Yizhen Evening News” program that the DPP Central Executive Committee is related to the appointment of the president and lawmakers, and among them are many British politicians. The new trend is divided into Nanliu and Beiliu. Nanliu is represented by Lai Qingde and Beiliu is Zheng Wencan. Zheng Wencan and Tsai Ing-wen have worked closely in the past. If the two sides continue to cooperate in the future, it may become a obstacle for Lai Qingde on the road to power.

Zhan Weiyuan believes that the key to Tsai Ing-wen’s two past re-elections was to use the “Republic of China Taiwan” theory to win the votes of average voters while maintaining the status quo; but Lai Qingde says he is a “pragmatic worker of Taiwan independence”. The party that changes cross-strait relations must bear the unfavorable factors caused by the change in cross-strait relations. Zhan Weiyuan pointed out that Lai Qingde’s new theory of cross-strait relations will face the greatest contradictions and challenges.
