Colombo: Sri Lankan batsman Lahiru Thirimanne has retired from international cricket. The 33-year-old player, who played 44 Tests, 127 ODIs and 26 T20 Internationals for Lanka, has come to an end after a 13-year long career. Thirimanne announced his retirement through Facebook. The player has scored 2088 runs in Tests, 3194 runs in ODIs and 291 runs in International T20Is. Thirimanne has seven centuries in international cricket.
“I tried to give the best performance as a star. A most magnificent effort was made. He did his duty righteously for his own land. The decision to retire is very sad. Several factors influenced this decision. I am taking this opportunity to thank the Sri Lankan Cricket Board, coaches, teammates, physios, trainers, analysts for all the support and encouragement,” Lahiru Thirimanne said on Facebook.
Lahiru Thirimanne, a left-handed batsman, was introduced to international cricket in 2010 through the ODI format. First played Test in 2011 and T20 in 2012. He made his debut against India in Mirpur. In 2013, he scored his maiden century against the Aussies in Adelaide. The top run-getter in Lanka’s Asia Cup triumph was part of the T20 World Cup-winning team. He scored 861 runs including a World Cup century in 2015, the best year of his career. The player was out of the Test team last year. He last played ODI in 2019 and appeared in T20 in 2016.
