Lagos – Warns: May become uninhabitable

Africa’s most populous city, Lagos, is flooded every year as a result of the annual rainy season. In mid-July this year, however, the city’s business district experienced one of the worst floods in recent years, writes CNN.

Pictures and videos from Lagos, southwestern Nigeria, show dozens of vehicles flooded by water after a heavy rain, the channel writes.

The city, home to over 21 million people, may become uninhabitable by the end of this century due to rising sea levels and soil erosion.

Global warming is leading to rising name levels, and forecasts range from 30 centimeters to over 2 meters in 2100. Much of Lagos is below 2 meters above sea level, writes NTB.

The problem is exacerbated by, among other things, “inadequate and poorly maintained drainage systems and uncontrolled urban growth”, according to a study led by the Department of Development Studies at the University of Sussex.

How much the sea will rise depends, among other things, on the extent of man-made climate emissions.
