Läderach closes, Reinhard opens at new location

The Reinhard bakery is moving to a new branch, while other shops are closing completely. For example, Hitzberger, which offers healthy fast food options, or the Läderach chocolatier.

The SBB confirmed this upon request. The latter in particular will probably be missed by some tourists who want to take a piece of traditional chocolate with them on their way out of the capital. It is unclear when exactly Läderach will leave the station. The SBB says it will be in August. Hitzberger left his location on August 20, 2024.

When asked, Läderach said that it was currently examining options to prevent the chocolatier in Bern’s train station from closing for good. “We are confident that we will be able to open a new branch in the train station area before Christmas,” said spokesman Matthias Goldbeck.

There are two other Läderach branches in the city of Bern. The family-run company, with headquarters in the canton of Glarus, is known for its hand-made fresh chocolates, which can contain fresh ingredients such as fruit, nuts or spices.

Coop, Rituals and Chicorée temporarily closed

Coop, the clothing store Chicorée and the cosmetics company Rituals will have to close temporarily due to the construction work. According to SBB, these shops should be able to reopen in spring 2025, at the same location. On the other hand, the areas of Läderach, Hitzberger and K Kiosk will have to make way for the new pedestrian underpass. At their location, the current and new underpass will merge into one another. Orell Füssli also has to go and has already moved into a new area on the gallery floor. The Reinhard bakery is moving at the end of August.

New “Reinhard” opens on August 26

Construction work on the new Reinhard location in Bern train station, to the right of the large staircase to the existing RBS train station, recently began. A blue construction wall has been protecting the construction site for a few days. Before that, the pop-up café “Adrianos Coffee & Playground” rented the premises for four years.

You can shop as usual at the existing Reinhard location until the evening of August 25th. The new branch will then open its doors on Monday, August 26th, ensuring a seamless transition. “Because the shop area is a little smaller, we will be streamlining the range slightly, but most people will hardly notice,” said manager Alexander Reinhard in a statement. The bakery has been present in the large station hall since 2002. Many people buy their morning coffee and the croissant that goes with it at the branch in the main station.
