Lada, Tesla, the adventures of Elon Musk and how the Russian company is ahead of the American one

Tesla shares continue to slide, with quite a few people believing part of the reason is the “adventure” Elon Musk has forged with Twitter.

Problems with the quality of the brand’s electric cars are also not helping the situation, with statistics showing a sharp decline in consumer interest in Tesla, writes the British publication Autoevolution. Delving into the history and reasons behind the problems of the American electric car manufacturer also leads to the discovery of an interesting fact: the average age of Tesla models is so great that the only company in the world with models with a longer life span long is currently the Russian Lada.

That’s right, only the Russian automaker sells cars older than Tesla. On average, Tesla models are 7.8 years old, which means that this is the average time they have been on the market as new developments. In Lada, the years are 18.9.

The data is the result of an official study by the Jato Dynamics company, which specializes in conducting market research in the automotive industry. Jato Dynamics specialists took into account when the models were first presented, not when the first deliveries to end customers were made. Thus, it turns out that the Model S was introduced a full 13 years ago in March 2009, or a full three years before the first customer received their vehicle.

And while Tesla cannot “beat” Lada in this not-so-prestigious ranking, the American company is on a par with the Indian Mahindra. The big difference here is that Mahindra has twice as many models, which naturally increases the average age, which is identical to that of the Tesla range: 7.8 years.

It becomes even more interesting if we add the results of almost anonymous Chinese manufacturers such as NIO and Xpeng, which are among the brands with the youngest model ranges – 2.6 years old.

Of the best-known Renault marques, the Stellantis conglomerate (which includes Peugeot, Citroen, Opel, Fiat, etc.) and Suzuki have fleets around 5 years old, while Honda, Hyundai and Mercedes have younger ranges around 3.5 years .
