Paris Fashion Week, steeped in René Lacoste’s legacy
LACOSTE unveiled its 2024 F/W collection at Paris Fashion Week on March 5. This collection is the debut show of new creative director ‘Pelagia KOLOTOUROS’ and expresses a strong homage to the brand founder and legendary tennis player ‘Rene Lacoste’.
Pelagia reinterpreted her unique creative vision from a new perspective while respecting the iconic brand heritage, presenting Lacoste’s new French fashion sports vision where the brand’s heritage and trends meet.
The elegant athletic heritage, which combines the essence of René Lacoste, which shows free French style, with ultra-modernity, has completed a new line that combines aesthetic beauty and sports performance at the intersection of function and fashion, expressing Lacoste’s unique French heritage.
The show is based on the first illustration of Lacoste’s unique symbol, the crocodile, designed by René and artist Robert George in 1927. The powerful, minimalist silhouette and colorful graphics were emphasized and expressed as impactful design elements throughout the collection, and the mesh lace dress and overall silver sequin embroidery added femininity and splendor.
In addition, with the motif of young Rene’s American adventure, tennis polo, tennis pleats, and fleece materials were taken from Lacoste’s original archive, and the pop art-style jacquard was inspired by Rene’s Davis Cup victory.
The pleated skirt, inspired by the skirt worn by tennis champion Susan Lenglen, was made of classic twill material and presented a perfectly tailored look. On the contrary, sports elements were added to transform the leather by creasing it.
Functional products such as sports tops and puffer jackets also showed an appropriate fusion of fashion and function. The coat, cut like a robe that emphasizes free movement, was worn over a sports top and fitted jacket to create a flexible and progressive look.
The materials naturally contrast with lace, silk, sheer layers and draping and sporty functional materials, combining elegance and sophistication, functionality and comfort, and ease of construction. The colors were also expressed in contrast, with the blue sky, grass and green court symbolizing Lacoste’s victory, pure white and sensuous black, and the maroon color of the clay court.
