The two groups in the study were compared for odor test results. The correlation of olfactory test results with demographic and laboratory data was investigated in the vitamin B12 deficient group. In the vitamin B12-deficient group, loss of smell was evident in 56.4 percent of patients but none of the subjects in the control group had olfactory dysfunction. In this study, researchers demonstrated for the first time that olfactory dysfunction can occur in patients with vitamin B12 deficiency.

“Apart from the negative correlation of age with odor identification scores, no other parameters studied showed a correlation with olfactory dysfunction,” the researchers wrote.

Meanwhile, other symptoms of B12 deficiency include extreme fatigue, lack of energy, shortness of breath, weakness, headache, pale skin, heart rate can be felt (palpitations), hearing sounds that come from within the body instead of an external source (tinnitus), and loss of appetite. appetite and weight loss.

Treatment for vitamin B12 deficiency depends on what is causing the condition. Usually, people can be easily treated with injections or tablets to replace the missing vitamins. To prevent shortages vitamin B12, it is highly recommended to consume foods rich in vitamin B12, such as poultry, meat, seafood, dairy products, and eggs.
