Lack of Sleep Increases Diabetes Risk by 16%, Study Finds

A Swedish study reported that the risk of developing diabetes rises to 16% in people who sleep 5 hours a day less than the normal recommended hours of 7 to 8 hours, according to the healthday website.

The research team from Uppsala University noted that maintaining a healthy diet does not change this result for those who sleep poorly or suffer from insomnia.

The researchers found that those who got only 3 to 4 hours of sleep faced a 41% higher risk of developing diabetes, according to the UAE 24 website.

By examining data from 248,000 people from the British Biobank records, it was found that even if short sleepers eat a healthy diet, the risk of developing diabetes remains the same.

The results indicated that vulnerabilities related to high diabetes risk began to appear in people who slept less than six hours, and were not observed in those who slept 7 or 8 hours.
