Lack of internet access hinders educational digitization: survey

  • Students are the most prominent group that promotes educational digitization in Mexico, shows a study by D2L.
  • The survey showed that the main obstacle to digitization is the lack of access to the internet and digital devices.
  • Although the adoption of learning management systems is lower than other Latin American countries, it has been increasing.

Students are the most prominent group that drives educational digitization in Mexico, revealed a study by the online learning company D2L.

59% of those surveyed say that students are the main driver of digital transformation, a survey shows that consulted 4,830 people in higher education.

However, there are obstacles to participating in educational digitization, such as access to the internet and digital devices (52%) and the lack of resources and infrastructure (35%), the respondents considered.

4 out of 10 surveyed said they use mobile technologies, while 3 out of 10 claimed not to use them. In this regard, students said that the support of teachers is essential for progress in digitization, and considered that the digital skills of the academic community should be strengthened.

Although the adoption of learning management systems is lower than other Latin American countries, after the pandemic, online resources went from 33% to 72%, the highest increase in the region.

What do parents say about educational digitization?

Mexican parents are the most dissatisfied with online education, according to another study by EY – Parthenon. 55 out of 100 consider that the quality of the classes has not improved with the change from face-to-face to digital format.

However, parents have accepted the new classroom formats and 53% of them have a better perception of online education, but consider it attractive only if it is temporary.

Likewise, they find it negative that their children spend too much time in front of a screen (66%), the lack of interaction between classmates and with teachers (64%); and the perception that students have more difficulty absorbing knowledge (39%).
