New Delhi ∙ India falls back into the Global Hunger Index (GHI). It ranks first in the world for child malnutrition with 19.3%.
India ranks 107 with a score of 29.1 in the index, which takes into account national and regional food availability across 121 countries. Afghanistan at 109th position is the only Asian country behind India. Pakistan (99), Bangladesh (84), Nepal (81) and Sri Lanka (64) are all far ahead of us. India ranked 101st in 2021 and 94th in 2020.
22.4 million people in India are undernourished. However, stunting among children decreased from 38.7% in 2012-2016 to 35.5% in 2017-21. Infant mortality decreased from 4.5% in 2014 to 3.3% in 2020.
