Lachine Hospital emergencies closed in the evening and at night

Lachine Hospital emergencies have been closed since Sunday, evenings and nights, for an indefinite period. A measure deplored by the establishment’s doctors.

From 7:30 p.m. to 7 a.m., patients who want to be treated in the emergency department of the Lachine Hospital will be redirected to the surrounding hospitals.

Almost a week after a first demonstration against the partial inaccessibility of emergencies, a second rally was organized this Sunday. This time, health workers and politicians denounced the closure, which would be effective that very evening.

The McGill University Health Center (MUHC) justifies the closure of emergency rooms by the shortage of nurses and respiratory therapists, which could affect patient safety.

But, for the Dr Paul Saba, president of the Lachine Hospital Council of Physicians, the lack of personnel had been present for a long time. He doesn’t see what suddenly caused the emergency room to close.

For me, this is inconceivable. We have enough nurses, nurses who want to doovertime. They are not forced.

The president of the Lachine MUHC Hospital Foundation, Jacques Filion, specifies that a working group has been set up to remedy this situation.

“I think that public safety is also about ensuring that people do not find themselves running into closed emergencies when they have a great need,” he emphasizes.
