He Labrego Galician Union denounces the abandonment of the Chantada and Sarria herds due to the negative consequences of vaccinating cattle against bluetongue. The union highlights the concern and increase in expenses on farms due to the “lack of coordination and lack of information from the Department of Rural Affairs.” The SLG emphasizes that he requested a meeting with Minister José González, “who is still missing,” on several occasions.
The regions of Chantada and Sarria are included within the restricted areas against the Blue Tongue of the Spanish State, in accordance with current legislation. After the massive vaccination campaign that was carried out in all the sheep and cattle of the municipalities of these regions older than three months, the Labrego Galego Union requested an interview with the Ministry to talk about the consequences that this vaccination is having on some farms. , beyond the side effects already reported a few weeks ago. The Ministry did not respond. The union requested another interview in a brief submitted on July 19.
The SLG declares that “already in the press release issued on July 20, and we reiterate in the letter to the Ministry, there are problems moving the calves that were left unvaccinated and that are now more than four months old. These calves, even if the mother is vaccinated, cannot be moved from the farm if they are not vaccinated. Who vaccinates them? Private clinical veterinarians who, of course, charge for the provision of that service.
Given this situation, the SLG considers that the Ministry of Rural Affairs is not providing information of any kind. There is a “repeche” vaccination of those calves that had not been vaccinated, but “even this is being done without any type of planning and information to the farms, which we find out when they call to say they are coming. On the Ministry’s website it appears that a continuity campaign begins on July 1 and that there is “an operation made up of personnel dependent on the Ministry of Rural Affairs who will act in an orderly and graduated manner.”
The SLG describes the state of the holdings with statements from an affiliate:
“I am in that situation, when I wanted to sell the calves they did not give me the guide to be able to take them to the fair, because they were not vaccinated. They don’t vaccinate, neither do the ADS, and the veterinarians that come to our house are not authorized. I was forced to call a vet I don’t know and pay him what he wanted to charge me, because there is no one to do it. The truth is that it is quite scandalous that they do not vaccinate, they do not notify you to do it and when we farmers want to or have to sell the animals that they left unvaccinated we cannot. Not even slaughterhouses. We have to put the two doses and see if we don’t have to wait even after the second to be able to sell them. One more month, whether or not we have how to maintain them, and with no other solution.”
The SLG describes this situation as “abandonment caused by the lack of coordination and carelessness of the Ministry, which is causing concern and causing economic losses on farms.” From the Labrego Galego Union they reiterate a series of demands to the councilor José González Vázquez:
-Vaccination without costs for livestock.
-Monitoring the effects of vaccines in animals.
-Information on this entire process in an agile and efficient way: on the Department’s website, in the Livestock Virtual Office (OVGAN), in the Agracias Comarcales Offices, etc.
-They urge the Ministry to respond to this problem that has been affecting Galician farmers for months and stop alluding to the assumption of their responsibilities.
