A vote calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip was rejected by 293 votes, but eight of the shadow ministers voted yes in defiance of party discipline and then announced their resignations.
Labor members were instructed to abstain in the vote and support Starmer’s position of calling for longer “humanitarian pauses” rather than a ceasefire.
The conflict within Labor over Starmer’s position has intensified in recent weeks.
Starmer, who hopes to become Britain’s next prime minister after next year’s general election, refuses to call for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
He supports the imposition of “humanitarian pauses” in Israeli attacks on the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas, which has entrenched itself in the Gaza Strip, using civilians as human shields. These pauses, their proponents claim, are necessary to deliver humanitarian aid to the enclave’s residents.
However, his position has caused dissatisfaction in the party ranks.
The Labor representative stated that the ceasefire would only freeze the conflict, but the hostages taken by the terrorists would still remain in the Gaza Strip. On the other hand, “Hamas” would preserve the infrastructure that would allow the group to repeat attacks similar to the October 7 massacre.
As reported, on October 7, “Hamas” organized a massacre in Israel, murdering more than 1,200 people, the absolute majority of whom were civilians. About 240 more people, including women, children and old people, were taken hostage by the terrorists and taken to the Gaza Strip.
Israel responded to the attack by “Hamas” by launching a massive bombardment of the Gaza Strip, but later launched a ground operation as well.
Authorities in the terrorist-controlled Gaza Strip say at least 11,000 people have been killed in Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip, but these numbers are believed to be exaggerated given the disinformation so far spread by Hamas. In addition, a large number of those killed are Islamist militants.
