RESIDENCES, WORKSHOPS AND COURSES
LABoral Centro de Arte welcomes 23 artistic residencies during this first semester in which 31 artists work, of which 29 are Asturian, and has several calls pending for the second half of 2021. Last year, despite the closure period caused by the pandemic, the cultural center hosted 28 residencies with 33 artists, figures that exceeded those of 2019.
Since 2008, the center has hosted 234 artistic residencies in which 378 creators have produced their works, 263 of them Asturian. In addition, LABoral Centro de Arte has since organized 112 workshops and courses in which nearly 1,400 people have participated.
Currently 13 Asturian artists and groups are working at the center selected in the Call for Artistic Residencies 2021. Residents have been joining the spaces provided by the facility since last February, which also offers creators technical resources, access to production center through a bag of hours and free participation in the centre’s vocational training programs.
In return, the artists in residence organize a public activity in the art center, so that the support also ends up favoring the dissemination of artistic projects and research.
In addition, LABoral Centro de Arte currently hosts eight residencies within the third call of the LABoral_Impulsa program, presented by the cultural center itself and by Gijón Impulsa, and which is designed to develop and innovate the cultural and creative industries of Gijón. The projects selected in this edition are related to fashion, graphics, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, performing and sound arts or development cooperation. The call also stands out for the fact that five of the eight selected projects are led by women.
The center also houses a residence within the framework of Reset Rural, a line of research and production of collaborative projects that connect rural knowledge with science, art and contemporary culture. Among these initiatives is La Xata La Rifa, nickname with which Mónica Cofiño has been proposing new dialogues with the rural environment for ten years from the Festival of Performing and Visual Arts in the Asturian Rural Territory.
