Labor market – Frankfurt am Main – No summer slump in the labor market: worries about training – career

Frankfurt / Main (dpa) – The race to catch up on the Hessian labor market continues after the Corona slump. Unlike the long-term trend, the number of unemployed continued to decline in July, as the regional directorate of the employment agency reported in Frankfurt on Thursday. As of July 13th, 176,579 women and men were registered as unemployed. That was 0.6 percent less than in the previous month and 13.5 percent or almost 28,000 fewer people than in July of the previous year. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.1 percent.

“The current figures suggest a significant recovery in the Hessian labor market,” said Frank Martin, head of the management. The number of new jobs has already exceeded the pre-crisis level and a large part of the sectors are reporting increasing numbers of employees, which would offset job losses, for example in the hospitality and industry.

In the gastronomy, every sixth job was lost in the pandemic, said Martin at a press conference with the Frankfurt gastro company Tiger und Palmen GmbH. He praised the company because, unlike many in the industry, it continues to train on a large scale. Across all apprenticeships, the number of vacancies in Hessen fell (-5.8 percent to 31353) as did the number of applicants (-10.0 percent to 32,535). There are still 10,800 unsupported applicants and 12,000 vacant apprenticeship positions. Martin named falling school leavers and the trend towards higher education as reasons for the weak development.

The DGB Hessen-Thüringen renewed its demand for a training guarantee for young people. This could be financed through a levy that all companies would have to pay and which would then benefit the training companies, said the union’s head of state, Michael Rudolph.

The Association of Hessian Entrepreneurs’ Associations (VhU) referred to the growing need for skilled workers in North Hesse. There, apartments and land prices are often much more affordable than in Wiesbaden, Frankfurt or Darmstadt, said managing director Dirk Pollert, according to the announcement. “Anyone looking for work, mobile and flexible should definitely try their luck in Northern Hesse.”
