With the temporary easing in summer 2020, the economic recovery gained momentum. New restrictions slowed down the recovery process significantly and had a direct impact on the labor market. In December, Schultheis found a glimmer of hope: “The rise in unemployment in the Tulln district of 17.1% is the lowest monthly increase in the crisis year so far, despite the onset of seasonal unemployment.”

Long-term unemployment is and will continue to be a particular focus of the AMS agenda. Many of those affected have health restrictions, sometimes an education that is no longer in demand, are returnees, older job seekers and personal mobility also plays a major role. The AMS supports job seekers from this group primarily through qualification and employment promotion programs – the funds for this come from the Corona labor market package.

“Where job searches and placement don’t work, we help with the financing of qualification offers in popular occupational areas,” says Schultheis. A particular focus here is training in the health and care sector, in technical professions and on-the-job training.

In mid-March, the AMS Tulln had to switch to distance support from Friday to Monday. “To protect the health of our customers and employees, we have shifted our services to the telephone, internet platform and eAMS account. That was done incredibly quickly and very well, ”reports Schultheis.

Another challenge was processing and issuing unemployment and emergency benefits while many applications for short-time work were being received. “Our Tulln AMS workforce ensured here, even in weekend shifts, that livelihood security and short-time work support were paid out quickly,” says Schultheis, praising his team, which will also face the Corona Challenge in 2021. Among other things, 17,000 training and further education positions are available nationwide for the qualification of jobseeking AMS customers.

For 2021, Hans Schultheis expects an economic boost with a subsequent upturn in employment “when the pandemic-related restrictions can finally be ended. But this also requires a high willingness to vaccinate the population. “
