According to the results of the counting of almost all ballots, Labor won 49% of the vote, while the opposition Conservative National Party, led by Judith Collins, received only 27% of the vote.
Meanwhile, the current Labor Coalition partners – the nationalist New Zealand in the first place, led by former Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peter – have won less than three per cent of the vote and are unlikely to be represented in parliament.
The Green Party, on the other hand, was supported by 8% of New Zealanders.
The Liberal Party “ACT New Zealand” has won the same amount of bass.
Labor is estimated to have won 64 of the 120 seats in parliament, securing an absolute majority.
No other party has succeeded since 1996, when New Zealand switched to a proportional electoral system.
“It’s a historic milestone,” said Breath Edwards, a political scientist at Victoria University, adding that it is the biggest milestone in New Zealand’s election history in 80 years.
Whether the government is formed by Labor alone or with the Greens, it will be the first purely left-wing government since 1999, and Collins has warned it will lead to tax increases and a business-hostile environment.
Collins has already acknowledged his defeat and congratulated Ardern on the victory, but warned that the Conservatives would be “strong opposition”.
“Three years will pass in an instant,” the leader of the National Party emphasized, pointing to the upcoming elections. “We’ll be back.”
Her deputy Gary Braunley, meanwhile, said the election was affected by the Ardern effect.
“For the last seven months of this government, Covid-19 has put aside all questions about their previous promises,” Brown said in a conversation with New Zealand Radio. “It’s that simple.”
In parallel with the parliamentary elections in New Zealand, referendums were held on the legalization of marijuana and euthanasia.
The results of the referendums are expected to be announced on October 30.
