Labor dispute on the North Shore

LONGUEUIL, QC, June 5, 2021 / CNW Telbec / – ArcelorMittal Mines and Infrastructure Canada (“ArcelorMittal”) and the executives of the five locals of the United Steelworkers have reached a negotiated agreement in principle for the renewal of their collective agreement.

The last round of negotiations, held in the presence of a conciliator appointed by the Minister of Labor, Employment and Social Solidarity, made it possible to settle the last outstanding points and to reach an agreement in principle. The President and CEO of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada and Chairman of the Management Committee of ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada, Mr. Mapi Mobwano, participated in these latter talks.

If members of the five locals of the United Steelworkers endorse the tentative agreement, the collective agreement will be renewed for a period of four years. ArcelorMittal will thus be able to ensure stability for all of its employees and business partners.

“We are pleased with this outcome, which is due to the efforts of both parties at the negotiating table and to the work of the conciliator. We leave it to the executives of the five locals to present the details of the tentative agreement to their members for adoption and are hopeful that we will turn the page on this conflict, ”said Mapi Mobwano.

It should be remembered that as part of its Transformation project undertaken in 2020, ArcelorMittal intends to assert even more over the coming years its desire to be actively involved in the vitality of the communities of Fermont and of Port-Cartier and projects in this direction have already been underway for several months with local stakeholders.

In addition, ArcelorMittal Mines and Infrastructure Canada is an essential link in the entire steel production chain, both in Quebec and elsewhere in the world, and the benefits of its presence in Quebec are considerable: the company spends approximately CA $ 1.25 billion each year and its contribution to Quebec’s GDP amounts to CA $ 1 billion. ArcelorMittal Mines and Infrastructure Canada generates more than 8,300 direct and indirect jobs in Quebec. ArcelorMittal is also the company that paid, by far, the most mining royalties to the Quebec state in 2020, or CA $ 234 million.
