The mathematics laboratory, unique in the department, located at the Rosa-Parks high school in Thionville, celebrated its four years. This laboratory was born out of a double ambition: how to restore a taste for mathematics in students and how to inspire girls to pursue scientific careers, thus fighting against social norms and prejudices that are still tenacious.

The mathematics laboratory was awarded the Mathematics of Happiness label by the Bonheurs laboratory of Cy Cergy Paris University. National Education officials, researchers from numerous universities, research institutes and associative partners (APMEP, the astronomy club of the Big Dipper and bridge club of Thionville), all responded to the invitation.

Innovative practices

This distinction rewards establishments that implement innovative practices for the teaching of mathematics, with the aim of promoting the well-being and success of students.

The researchers reminded that mathematics is often perceived as a difficult and abstract subject, but that by using innovative approaches, this subject can be made more accessible and more attractive for students.

Olivier Cottet, academic director of Moselle, for his part praised the dynamics of the establishment, the teachers and honored Nathalie Braun, pilot of the laboratory, for her involvement in favor of the well-being of the pupils.

Many workshops

On the occasion of National Mathematics Week, more than 250 second-year students were able to take part in the Mathematics Festival sponsored by the association Les Maths en scène. The high school students enjoyed doing mathematics by participating in various workshops and conferences, including one led by the prestigious 2022 Fields medalist, Hugo Duminil-Copin.
