Would you be willing to eat lab-grown meat? This question, recently asked to people who took part in surveys conducted by Statista as part of Consumer Insights, seems divisive. Lab-grown meat, also called cultured meat or cell-based meat, is produced from animal cells, often taken by biopsy. These are placed in culture media, in order to develop meat outside the animal. In theory, cultured meat could thus offer an option to meat lovers who care about animal welfare, or the impact of the meat industry on our planet, because its production does not require either breeding or slaughter of living beings.
However, as our infographic shows, the idea of eating meat grown in a laboratory is currently not very convincing. Indeed, if one in five people questioned in India said they were ready to try this new food, without much surprise, they were only 9% in France. In the United States, one of only two countries, with Singapore, where this meat is currently marketed, 16% of respondents said they were open to the idea of consuming it. However, it is unlikely that cellular meat will soon arrive on European plates, since no authorization request has yet been submitted for the European market.
