Since the beginning of the summer, the association La Table Ouverte has been distributing one weekly in the streets of Nîmes. These seasonal fruits, which come from supermarket surpluses, are a little boost for the inhabitants of the Richelieu district.
The street was crowded this Thursday, August 10, 2023 in front of the van of the Table Ouverte association in Nîmes. For the seventh time this summer, the association distributed free seasonal fruit to local residents, supported by the Volunteers of the Banque Alimentaire du Gard.
In total, 900 kilos of melons from Fourques and 200 kilos of nectarines from Jonquières St Vincent were given to passers-by.
The fruits come from supermarket surpluses, which allows for regular distributions, depending on arrivals.
As the association tells it on Facebook, it didn’t take more than an hour to sell all the stock.
Once again, this distribution was open to all, and not reserved for the beneficiaries alone, so as not to waste the fruits.
“I saw the ad on Facebook and I said to myself, why not take advantage of this distribution which is free for people who sometimes have a little food difficulty. I find it very good”says a resident of the neighborhood, who came for the first time.
Throughout the year, the association La Table Ouverte provides food aid to families most in difficulty. Here, inflation is very difficult to bear, an observation that is reflected in the association’s figures.
Since the end of last year, we have doubled our number of beneficiaries. This represents 820 registrants, or 650 households, most of whom are single people, precarious retirees or single-parent families.
Pietro Truddaiu, President La Table Ouverte (Nîmes).
The association is preparing new distributions in other districts of the city whereas it had hitherto been confined to the Richelieu district.
