The Departmental Fire and Rescue Service of Reunion, the SDIS 974, announces, this Tuesday, March 28, to have invested “more than 2.6 million euros to strengthen its operational capacities”.

“Each operation is important, each victim must be taken care of in the best possible way”, assures Cyrille Melchior, president of the departmental council. Reunion has 860 professional firefighters and more than 1,200 volunteer firefighters.

Firefighting resources have thus been reinforced with the arrival of six medium forest fire tankers. Called the CCF-M, this all-road fire engine is intended for the fight against all types of fire, forest, brush, or even agricultural crops. He can take all types of paths and get as close as possible to the flames.

Firefighters will also have new outfits to fight fires. They will be distributed according to priority needs. These red protective textiles are designed to be worn during firefighting interventions. They have a high level of protection against heat, while remaining lightweight.

“Even if it represents less than 10% of our annual activity, interventions to fight fires in buildings or natural areas are the most dangerous for our teams”, indicates Colonel Frédéric Léguillier, head of the SDIS 974 Corps.

Still in the fight against fires, self-contained breathing apparatus will allow firefighters to protect themselves to breathe “in the event of a toxic, asphyxiating or oxygen-poor atmosphere”. The SCBA allows air to be supplied from the bottle carried on its back.

Finally, the SDIS 974 has digital tablets for medical and first aid assessment. All the information collected on the state of health of the victims is thus dematerialized and circulates more easily between the firefighters, the SAMU and the hospitals. The objective is to improve the quality of care for victims. All Rescue and Victim Assistance Vehicles (VSAV) and Medical Rescue Vehicles (VSM) in the department will be equipped with these tablets.

“Rescuing victims represents more than 80% of the operational activity of our firefighters, as such it is essential to facilitate their working conditions”specifies the departmental director of SDIS 974.
