“La Place closes a quarter of branches, no forced layoffs”

Restaurant chain La Place closes more than a quarter of its stores as a result of the corona crisis, De Telegraaf reports. Some 480 jobs are at risk. The financial top executive of parent company Jumbo says in the newspaper that there are no forced layoffs.

Of the 80 branches in the Netherlands, 23 close. These include branches along highways, but also in inner city shopping centers. The branch managers will be updated the next morning, and the staff will follow in the evening.

La Place’s restaurants have been owned by Jumbo since early 2016. The supermarket chain took over the company from department store V&D, which had recently gone bankrupt.

La Place was considered very profitable, but the corona crisis has pushed the company into the red. A monthly loss of 6 to 7 million euros is now incurred; more than half of the branches are still closed. The branches that remain must all be open again in September.
