‘La Place closes a quarter of branches: 480 jobs at risk’

“In the one and a half meter society we have to make clear choices”, says Ton van Veen in De Telegraaf today. He is the financial top man of parent company Jumbo. For almost a quarter of the branches of restaurant chain La Place, this means that the doors remain closed.

The managers and employees of the branches will be informed later today. It concerns 23 branches that will close, in Apeldoorn, Bergen op Zoom, Breda Hazeldonk, Gouda, Holten, Nieuwegein, Leiderdorp and Zevenaar, among others. A number of highway branches are also closing because of ‘insufficient prospects for the future’.

‘Looking for a solution for all people’

The jobs of 480 employees are at risk from the decision. Still, Van Veen says he will do everything he can to prevent forced redundancies. “We will try to find a solution for all people. That means that we will do everything to relocate people.”

According to Van Veen, the closure of the branches does not mean the end of La Place. “We are currently developing a new concept, which we will roll out to new branches this fall,” he tells the newspaper.

Very cost effective

La Place was taken over by Jumbo four years ago. The restaurant chain was previously part of V&D, until that department store went bankrupt. La Place has been very profitable in recent years, but that changed during the corona crisis. La Place currently has a monthly loss of 6 to 7 million euros.
