A cold La Niña current could be observed by the end of the year and will affect Switzerland. This possibility is estimated at 60%.the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said in Geneva on Wednesday.
While this scenario is slightly less likely for the September-November period, it becomes more credible for October-FebruaryThe possibility of a warm El Niño returning by then is negligible, the WMO adds.
What is La Niña or El Niño?
La Niña causes a cooling of ocean temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific. It is accompanied by opposite effects in El Niño which exacerbates droughts in territories such as Australia, as well as parts of Asia and the American continent.
Droughts are also expected in several regions, such as parts of the American, African and Asian continents, as well as in southern South America.
La Niña will not reverse the global trend
“Since June 2023, we have seen an exceptional series of high global land and sea surface temperatures”
Celeste Saulo, Secretary General
Cold La Niña flow would not change situation in the “long term”: “namely the increase in global temperatures due to greenhouse gases.” (lal/ats)
