The Chamber of Deputies elected new representatives to the Jury for the Prosecution of Magistrates (JEM) and the Council of the Magistracy. By 57 votes in favor, Deputies David Rivas and Rodrigo Blanco were elected as new members, and Deputy Roberto González for the Council of the Magistracy with 52 votes.

Pedro Alliana, president of the Chamber of Deputies, took the oath of the appointed deputies. The representation of the incumbents before the JEM was given by motion of the deputy Raúl Latorre. While for the position of substitute, deputy Juan Acosta was appointed with 52 votes by motion of deputy Justo Zacarías.

For his part, Liberal deputy Sergio Rojas proposed Deputy Celeste Amarilla and Deputy Juan Manuel Acevedo to fill the 3 vacancies established for the JEM. However, Deputy Basilio Núñez proposed that the alternates be studied next week, a motion that was successful and the election of the other alternates was postponed.

Meanwhile, the deputy Roberto González proposed to continue as a representative before the Council of the Magistracy for “his good performance that led him to occupy the presidency in recent periods,” said Deputy Zacarías who requested his appointment.

The judges, prosecutors and public defenders who belong to the Association of Judicial Magistrates of Paraguay elect this Wednesday their new president for the period 2021 to 2024. The candidates are Enrique Mongelós and Ángel Daniel Cohene.

In Asunción, the vote is taking place in the Auditorium Hall of the Palace of Justice, located on the first floor of the judicial headquarters, respecting all sanitary recommendations. Likewise, in the different judicial offices in the interior, the magistrates can cast their votes. There is a total of 1,635 judges, prosecutors and public defenders to vote and elect their authority.

Currently, the president of the Association of Judicial Magistrates of Paraguay is the civil servant Enrique Mongelós, who intends to continue for one more period. While the other candidate is also the labor chambermaid Ángel Daniel Cohene, who a few years ago was head of the AMJP.

Very early, the court ministers Luis María Benítez Riera and Alberto Martínez Simón approached the auditorium of the judicial headquarters of Asunción to cast their respective votes.
