The official New Year’s Eve party in Rio de Janeiro, which was to take place in a reduced format and with internet transmission, was completely canceled due to the worsening of the pandemic, the Mayor’s Office reported.

The plan for the traditional festivities with music and fireworks that draw crowds to Copacabana beach every year had already undergone modifications due to the virus, which killed more than 23,700 people in the state of Rio de Janeiro and has once again put pressure on its system of Health. “Although the party had been projected in a new format (without the presence of the public, without burning fires and to be followed by TV), at this time the Mayor’s Office opts to cancel the event in respect of all the victims and to favor the safety of all ”, the institution said in a statement. The 2021 carnival was also canceled, but there is a possibility that it will be celebrated out of season, in case the population can be vaccinated.

The president of the National Transportation Directorate (Dinatran), Juan José Vidal, said this Wednesday that there will be no release of buses for the end of the year parties. Restricting travel to the interior is not ruled out, in the framework of the health crisis unleashed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“What is not going to happen this year is the release of the schedule as it normally occurs from December 20 to January 6. This year there will be no release of hours, but the companies will continue to operate ”, explained Vidal in communication with 1080 AM.

He argued that the institution is waiting for the new decree of the Executive Power on the provisions that will be established for the end of the year holidays, which would aim to limit travel to the interior in order to reduce the risk of contagion with COVID-19 and a massive spread of the virus.

Vidal indicated that Dinatran will have posts installed in various parts of the country in order to control compliance with established health protocols and all companies will have to keep their schedules because there will be no release.

“At least so far that is the indication we have from the Ministry of Health. We are going to wait for the weekend for the new measures that the minister speaks, but, for the moment, there will be no restriction or release of schedules. It is a way of also restricting transportation because there will be fewer buses that will go to the interior, “he added.

The main restriction that the Ministry of Public Health would apply during Christmas and New Years would be the limitation of travel to the interior of the country. They fear that travelers will spread the virus from Asunción and Central, the current epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Vice Minister of Transportation, Pedro Britos, announced that the sale of electronic ticketing cards will be expanded. (photo: CHRISTIAN MEZA)

The Vice Minister of Transportation, Pedro Britos, announced that the electronic ticketing will finally begin on February 1 due to the fact that the period of mixed payment of the public transport ticket is extended until January 31, 2021.

They point out that an attempt will be made to expand the sale of electronic ticketing cards with the arrival of more devices, while it will also be possible to continue paying with cash.

“Until January 31, the public transport ticket can be paid in cash or with a card. Officially we are going to leave on February 1 with the obligation, “said Britos yesterday during a virtual press conference.

The decision is due to the fact that they seek not to happen what happened weeks before in terms of the shortage of electronic cards and their resale by third parties. “We want the system to be friendly for everyone and improve the service, that is why we made the decision to extend the mixed payment period,” he said.

He stated that since October of last year to date, 12,411,738 trips have been made. While until yesterday 1,266,840 recharges of electronic cards were made. While from November 8 to yesterday 26,284 cards were sold; totaling 614,478 cards sold.

“The last stock of cards to reach 500,000 will be arriving in the first week of January,” said the Deputy Minister of Transportation, who blamed resellers for the lack of cards that led to the postponement of the electronic ticketing service.

Weeks ago, the resale of electronic cards generated thousands of complaints from users and motivated the Vice Ministry of Transportation to postpone the mandatory use of electronic cards until December 31. Finally, on February 1, the new payment system in public transport will govern.

For its part, the Chamber of Senators has already approved the bill that seeks to punish resellers who offer cards at prices higher than those officially set by the companies that provide the service, with fines equivalent to 10 and 100 minimum wages.
