Students from the Colegio Nacional de Choré, in the department of San Pedro, 224 kilometers from Asunción, threaten to take over the educational institution if the Ministry of Education and Sciences (MEC) does not repair the classrooms in danger of collapsing. The president of the student union of the Colegio Nacional de Choré, Johana Viera, warned this Monday that they will take forceful measures if they do not receive answers from the MEC due to the danger of the collapse of three classrooms of the educational institution.

“We are going to start with our protests and if we do not find answers from the Ministry of Education, then we will take the school and it will not be for a day,” said the president of the student union from Choré in communication with radio 1020 AM.
He argued that the Ministry of Education has already learned about the situation of the educational institution, but did not take the corresponding measures and currently the classrooms are still in danger of collapsing, despite the return to classes starting this Monday.

“In October we made the complaint and presented it to the municipality, government and the MEC. The firefighters came to see and closed it because it is in danger of collapsing. According to the MEC, an investment of US$100 million was allocated to infrastructure during the current government and more than US$200 million with resources from the National Fund for Public Investment and Development (Fonacide).
Educational authorities estimate that some 12,000 schools throughout the country do not meet the adequate conditions to house students, so classrooms and spaces in general must be refurbished. “How can we do something if our budget is zero, the genuine funds for construction are not held by the MEC, but by municipalities and governorates,” Zárate told the media this morning.
Zárate pointed out that work has been done to strengthen the governorships and municipalities and that a control of the Fonacide investments must be carried out. “We ask that they adjust what they must adjust.
