According to PAHO/WHO, vaccines activate the body’s natural defenses and thus reduce the risk of contracting diseases. They work by triggering a response from the immune system, which recognizes the invading microbe (for example, a virus or bacteria), generates antibodies, which are proteins that the immune system naturally produces to fight disease, and remembers the disease and how to fight it. .
If we are exposed to the germ that the vaccine protects against, our immune system can quickly destroy it before we start to feel sick. In short, vaccines are an ingenious and safe way to induce an immune response without causing disease.
