Foreign Minister Euclides Acevedo does not rule out making a “diplomatic claim” to the Covax mechanism due to the delay in the delivery of the doses of vaccines against COVID-19 purchased by the Government. Despite this, he is optimistic about the arrival of more immunizers, he estimates that 2021 would close with 4 million anti-COVID doses.

“What we can do is a kind of diplomatic claim, I do not agree with that of returning the money, if the diplomatic task is to try to correct errors and mistakes, seek successes and consensus,” said the minister.

He also informed that in August the Vaxxinity, vaccines from the North American laboratory, will be produced in Taiwan, and one of the first destinations of the production will be Paraguay.

“That is why we are excited that in the month of August we will have enough quantity, it will not be donations, but we will buy,” he said.

In addition to Vaxxinity immunizers, Covaxins from India are also expected. “I am hopeful that we will have a significant batch of Covaxin, with the reduction of infections and deaths in India, there is a favorable environment. The other week I have a telephone conversation with the ambassador, they would be approving the shipment again, capable of being 500,000 doses, “said the minister.

Finally, he highlighted the cooperation of citizens to go to the vaccinations, later they will be focused on the economic reactivation to make a qualitative leap towards prosperity.

The Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare must respond to the Chamber of Deputies regarding the acquisition and shipment of the COVID-19 vaccines purchased by the Government through the Covax mechanism. The request for a report was approved by the Lower House in its ordinary session and the health portfolio must respond to the request within 15 days.

The document, which was promoted by deputy Hugo Ramírez, seeks to have the details of the total amount paid by the Paraguayan State for the 4,300,000 doses of vaccines, with data on the date and the form of payment.

Likewise, this draft resolution asks for explanations about the claim of the Paraguayan government to the international mechanism for lack of compliance and, in the event that such request has been answered, it asks to know what the response was.

In another part of the project, clarification is requested if the Government foresaw or made a formal request for a refund of the amount paid for the acquisition of vaccines, taking into account the failure to deliver the immunization doses. In addition, Congressman Ramírez asked whether there is a clause by which the contract with Covax can be terminated.

Finally, the document asks the Ministry of Health if there are enough vaccines for the application of the second immunization dose to the population. “If the acquisition of more vaccines is planned to be able to comply with the application of the second dose, which laboratories are in talks with and which ones have already been purchased, and in what quantity,” the text refers.

Geneva, Switzerland. AFP.

Covax will immediately receive 110 million doses of anticovid vaccines from the Chinese companies Sinovac and Sinopharm to allow the international distribution system to face the shortage in the midst of the resurgence of the pandemic, the Vaccination Alliance (Gavi) said Monday. The agreement sealed between Gavi and the two Chinese pharmaceutical groups also includes options to purchase additional doses in the coming months, according to a statement from the Alliance, which together with the World Health Organization (WHO) created the Covax mechanism for the distribution of anticovid vaccines to low-income countries.

“Thanks to this agreement, since these vaccines have already received emergency approval from the WHO, we can start delivering doses to countries immediately,” said Seth Berkley, who heads the Alliance. As of July 12, the Covax system, which aims to provide equitable access to covid vaccines for both rich and poor countries, had distributed more than 102 million doses of vaccines to 135 countries. However, this is far below the targets set at the beginning of the year.

BLOCKING

India also blocked exports of AstraZeneca vaccines destined for Covax, while rich countries monopolize the purchases of more efficient serums, exacerbating inequality, a situation described as “obscene” by the head of the WHO. While the EU and the United States aspire to vaccinate most of their population, including children from the age of 12, the African continent, for example, has only managed to immunize around 1% of its population.

The agreement announced on Monday provides for the purchase of 60 million doses from Sinopharm between July and the end of October, and 50 million doses from Sinovac between July and the end of September.
