Former President Jiang Zemin died of leukemia and multiple organ failure in Shanghai at 12:13 noon at the age of 96. For Hong Kong citizens, one of the scenes that shocked them the most was in 2000 when they scolded a Hong Kong reporter “Too simple! Sometimes naive!” (too simple, sometimes naive).
On October 27, 2000, Jiang Zemin met with Tung Chee-hwa, the then chief executive whose term of office was about to expire, in Zhongnanhai, and at that time, whether Tung Chee-hwa would be re-elected became a hot topic.
One of the Hong Kong reporters asked if the central government had appointed Tung Chee-hwa as chief executive. Jiang Zemin immediately approached the newsroom and scolded loudly: “Your press should learn from this. I have experienced many battles… The media should also improve their knowledge. You run faster than Western journalists, but ask questions, too simple! Sometimes naive!”
The reporter who asked the question was Zhang Baohua, known as the “Flower of News”. He graduated from the journalism department of CUHK in 1995 and worked for the South China Morning Post and Cable News. In recent years, Zhang Baohua has opened a gallery “SC Gallery” to cultivate local artists.
