La Macarena from New York and Juanita Reina

Two universal devotions, one divine and the other pagan, in the same shot: l’Esperanza Macarena and Juanita Reina.

On 1985 Luis Alvarez Duarte carved for the Mc Klean Christian community of New York what is perhaps the best copy of the San Gil dolorosa.

It was his second reproduction of the Macarena after the one he made in 1976 for the Dominican College of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Caracas (Venezuela). Before embarking on the long transatlantic journey, the image received numerous visits to the sculptor’s studio, where everyone raved about such a level of perfection in a reproduction.
