Glendale, CA, Celebrates Top Arts Ranking
The City of Glendale, nestled within the greater Los Angeles area, has earned a prestigious spot among the nation’s most vibrant arts communities. The 2024 Arts Vibrancy Index, compiled by SMU DataArts, the National Center for Arts Research, ranked glendale 12th out of 20 large cities for its thriving arts scene.
This accolade is based on a comprehensive analysis of arts supply, demand, and governmental support across over 900 U.S. communities. Glendale’s consistent presence on the Index since 2015 is a testament too the dedication of the Glendale library, Arts and Culture (GLAC) department.

GLAC, established in 1907, oversees eight neighborhood libraries, including the iconic Brand Library & Art Center, housed in a historic mansion, and the expansive Central Library. The Central Library also features the ReflectSpace Gallery, a unique exhibition space dedicated to exploring issues of genocide and human rights as part of the International coalition of Sites of Conscience.
Recent GLAC initiatives highlight Glendale’s commitment to artistic expression and cultural dialogue.The reflectspace Gallery recently showcased “Peace is Radical,” a powerful exhibition by renowned street artist Shepard Fairey, exploring themes of democracy, equality, and environmental justice. In a remarkable collaboration with NASA’s Jet propulsion Laboratory (JPL), GLAC presented “Blended Worlds: Experiments in Interplanetary Imagination” at the Brand Library & art Center. “In the face of rising costs, shifting funding sources and long-standing inequities in access, funding and employment, arts communities have continued to demonstrate their resilience and the undeniable richness they bring to towns and cities across the country,” explains Dr. Jennifer Benoit-Bryan, Director of SMU DataArts. “The Arts vibrancy Index helps the arts community – leaders, businesses, governments, funders – better understand the dynamics of arts activities that occur in local areas. Over the years, it’s been rewarding to see the diverse ways the reports have been used: from funders who use data to analyze how their investments can increase arts vibrancy in the communities they serve to arts leaders who use the reports and interactive maps in their decision-making for relocating their operations or determining markets for touring shows.
