La Liga boss Javier Tebas is disappointed with CAS’s decision to reverse Manchester City’s European exclusion. The international sports tribunal decided to honor the appeal of the English top club on Monday.
“We need to see if the CAS is the right body to challenge decisions in football,” Tebas told the BBC. “Switzerland is a country with a rich history of court rulings, but the CAS is not meeting the high standards that have been set.”
Manchester City was banned from European football for two years in February because the club allegedly misinformed UEFA about its sponsorship income and budget between 2012 and 2016. According to the CAS, there was insufficient evidence for this.
The sports tribunal did rule that City did not cooperate sufficiently with the UEFA investigation. The six-time national champion must therefore pay a fine of 10 million euros, much lower than the fine of 30 million euros imposed by the European Football Association.
In February, Tebas was still very happy with the European suspension of City for violating the Financial Fair Play regulations. “They are finally taking action,” he wrote then. “It is essential that these rules are adhered to and enforced. We have long advocated heavy penalties against Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.”

Lampard did not hope for an extra CL ticket
For Chelsea coach Frank Lampard, the CAS’s statement comes as no surprise. He had already agreed that he and his team would have to finish in the first four in the Premier League to enforce a Champions League ticket.
“I never set my hopes on an extra ticket (for the Champions League, ed.),” Said Lampard. “We are now third, so we have it in our own hands. This morning it became clear that we have to fight for that.”
Chelsea has only a small lead over competitors Leicester City and Manchester United, which also play against Southampton on Monday-evening. If City were excluded from European football, the last Premier League CL ticket would have reached number five.
