The talented footballer had to leave the pitch in the final minutes of Tuesday’s match due to an injury. As Barcelona reported, Bernal suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, as well as a related injury to the external meniscus.
Such injuries usually mean at least 9-10 months of downtime.
“The player will undergo surgery in the coming days,” Barcelona added in a statement.
Considered a great talent of the “Pride of Catalonia”, Bernal, a club teammate of Robert Lewandowski, made his debut in the first team in the opening round against Valencia (2:1).
Bernal suffered the same injury as Spain international Gavi, with the 20-year-old from Barcelona still recovering from a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and an injury to the external meniscus, which occurred in November 2023.
Barcelona is the leader of the Spanish top league after three rounds. They have won all their matches so far 2:1 – apart from the matches with Valencia and Rayo Vallecano, also with Athletic Bilbao. Lewandowski has three goals to his credit.
