La Jornada – Priests of Chiapas have overcome contagion of Covid-19: Sse

San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chis. In Chiapas, no priest has died due to Covid-19, and those who have been infected, including the bishop of Tapachula, Jaime Calderón Calderón, have managed to overcome the disease, sources from the state Health Secretariat reported.

“Of the 194 deaths that occurred in Mexico -five bishops, 172 priests / religious, 10 deacons and seven religious-, no deaths have occurred” in the entity, they added.

“In these times of pandemic, this group is recognized for its constant dedication and its closeness to the population in search of well-being,” the sources said.

They expressed that “in times of coronavirus, a group that has been present and is recognized for its constant dedication and its closeness to the population in the search for well-being, are the clergy, the priests and in general the people who from faith, they go through remote regions and in often inhospitable situations, accompanying the people of Chiapas during the pandemic. But fortunately, none of them has died in our entity ”.

The agency also reported that “in accordance with the federal public health policy of continuing with preventive actions to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the Chiapas government decided to extend the suspension of work in the public service to March 31 next, resuming activities on April 1 ”.

According to official sources, 10,22 infections and 1,322 deaths from coronavirus have been reported in Chiapas.
