As part of its crusade for health, the High Specialty Regional Hospital of the Yucatan Peninsula (HRAEPY) announced its Extramural program with which they seek to bring a breast and prostate cancer prevention campaign to various municipalities in the state.
Alfredo Medina Ocampo, general director of HRAEPY explained that this project is in line with his “zero rejection” policy and is aimed at the most vulnerable society, that is, those that do not have social security, which is half of the state, According to the doctor.
“The hospital has more than 30 medical specialties; just as there are complex care discharges, there is a series that can be provided to society so that these patients can go directly when they have an illness and are not insured”.
“Change the paradigm that the hospital waits for patients to arrive, what we will do is go directly to the communities to take two important programs: breast and prostate cancer,” he said.
José Antonio Tut Bojórquez, medical director of HRAEPY, recalled that any patient who does not have legal status can go to the hospital where they will be treated and evaluated by a doctor to later receive a medical appointment; or whatever you require for your care.
“This is implemented free of charge, however, we realized that we could do more and with the initiative of our medical specialists and on the instructions of Dr. Medina Ocampo we started the HRAEPY Extramural program.”
The project, he explained, began at the Tekax General Hospital, where two activities were carried out: timely detection of prostate cancer with medical specialists and residents; and breast cancer. Similarly, they have carried out preventive activities in Ticul.
“This has a planning of weeks in which we have even taken laboratory samples from patients so that when they arrive they already have a comprehensive assessment by the doctor,” he shared.
Another advantage of the program, he pointed out, is that an agenda is kept; then the patient is cared for; and when he leaves this activity he does so with a medical appointment at HRAEPY in less than two weeks with all the required studies.
“What we are looking for is that the HRAEPY be a timely reference center for patients without rights who most require it,” he reiterated.
In the future, added Tut Bojórquez, they will seek to collaborate with other institutions in the interior of the state; and it is planned to add the congenital heart disease area. HRAEPY, he stressed, is the only one in the peninsula that has this area.
Program details
Ariane Flores Rivera, coordinator of the breast cancer program explained that it is focused on this disease, since it ranks second in incidence worldwide; and the first in mortality in women aged 25 to 69 years.
“This pathology is affecting women of reproductive age, when they have many years of life ahead of them. If we carry out a prevention activity, we are helping these women to continue having an active life and being the pillar of the family”, she pointed out.
As part of the program, she explained, they teach women to self-examine, since they believe that prevention begins at home. They also guide them on healthy lifestyle habits to reduce the risk of developing this type of disease.
“We also have an ultrasound service that has been provided by the different units to which we have gone to later request their mammography. If we detect a woman who requires medical attention, it is channeled to our unit”.
Regarding the program related to prostate cancer, Antonio Esqueda Mendoza, head of the urology department, recalled that HRAEPY has been working with these timely detection campaigns for some years.
“It is known that it is the most common cancer in men. Unfortunately we have observed a problem: the barrier that the idiosyncrasy of men has to reach a urology consultation, ”he lamented.
This causes, he said, that when a patient is diagnosed with prostate cancer, it is generally when it is already advanced. In other parts of the world, it is usually done in the early stages, when there are more opportunities.
