La Jornada – Mariners defeat Angels 6-3 with Jese Winker’s ‘Grand Slam’

Seattle. Jesse Winker hit a grand slamMarco Gonzalez struck out seven as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Los Angeles Angels 6-3 on Sunday as Shohei Ohtani received a visit from medical assistants and continued to battle.

Winker’s homer, Seattle’s second of the season and Winker’s third of his career, put Seattle up 5-1 and helped the Mariners maintain third place in the AL wild-card race. Eugenio Suárez added two hits and drove in a run.

Ohtani, the dual-threat sensation, was seen by medical assistants before his second at-bat after colliding with Gonzalez near the on-deck circle, but stayed in the game.

Gonzales (7-11) snapped a two-game losing streak, giving up one walk and eight hits, in Seattle’s second win in three games. David Fletcher hit a two-run double in a three-hit fourth inning and added an RBI in the sixth to cut Seattle’s lead to 6-3.

Andrés Muñoz, Penn Murfee and Paul Sewald combined for three scoreless innings in relief as Seattle improved to a 22-9 record in its last 31 games.

For the Angels, Venezuelan Luis Rengifo 4-1 with a run scored; and the Dominican Magneuris Sierra 4-0.

For the Mariners, the Venezuelan Eugenio Suárez 3-2 with two runs scored and one produced.
