The Aguascalientes State Government, through the Aguasnivelense Institute for Migration (Iapemi), brought the iconic figure of La Catrina to New York, in an effort to share the cultural wealth of Mexico with the migrant community and residents of that city.
As part of the Day of the Dead celebration, this iconic figure will remain in Times Square until next November 3rd, to promote cultural heritage and strengthen the identity among Mexicans living abroad.
Natzielly Teresita Rodríguez Calzada, the head of Iapemi, said that this campaign aims to connect migrants with their traditions and, above all, to strengthen their connection with Aguascalientes and Mexico, especially on dates of has real cultural significance.
“La Catrina, the pride of Aguascalientes and a symbol of Mexican culture and the spirit of Christmas, has become a reminder of the roots and value of traditions that, despite the distance, remain alive in the hearts of migrants”, on to keep
He pointed out that the presence of La Catrina in New York has not only raised the interest of Mexicans who live in that city, but also people of other nationalities who had the opportunity to learn about the traditions and meaning of the Day of the Dead.
He pointed out that by promoting activities that celebrate Mexican culture and keep it current outside the borders, the State Government, through Iapemi, reaffirms its commitment to the migrant community.
The event was well received and allowed attendees to feel closer to home, while enjoying a performance that pays homage to their roots and promote pride in traditions.
