La Guarapachanga: music for all tastes this weekend in Pinar del Río

In Pinar del Río, melodies reign with the celebration of the VIII International Music Festival “La Guarapachanga”, until next October 8. Trova, son, jazz, country music and concert music find space in the extensive program of the celebration.

During the first days of the event, workshops and conferences referring to the country’s musical heritage were added to the presentations of various artistic groups from Pinar del Río; among them, Valleson, Pinar Son, the Polyphonic Choir, the Charanga Aces del Ritmo, the Arsis Saxophone Quintet and Vocal Universo. Meanwhile, the national music prize winners Pancho Amat and José María Vitier offered concerts in Viñales and the José Jacinto Milanés theater, respectively.

For Friday night, the opening of the exhibition “Woman’s Imaginary” by Silvia Rodríguez Rivero is scheduled for the Provincial Museum; as well as the Jazz and Other Visions concert, at the La Sitiera Musical Promotions House, which will feature the participation of InterNos and guest soloists.

The presentation of Adelfa Velázquez and several repentista poets will open the Saturday event at the Casa de la Décima Celestino García, at 10:00am. For its part, the House of the Young Creator will host, at 3:30pm, a Trovada with Yamira Díaz, Vocal Universo and young troubadours from the Hermanos Saíz Association.

The protagonists of Saturday night will be the presentations of the Iris Duo, at 9:30pm, in the La Age de Oro theater hall, and of Pancho Amat and his Cabildo del Son, at 10:30pm, in La Sitiera.

On Sunday there will be a Retreat of the Provincial Concert Band in Roberto Amarán Park, at 9:00am; Meanwhile, the presentation of children’s songs in Parque Martí, at 10:30am, closes the festival program.

With the collaboration of the Cuban Institute of Music, the Ministry of Culture and its provincial management, among other institutions, La Guarapachanga seeks to promote an authentic festival of Cuban music in each edition.
