Traditional Japanese stories are full of very strange creatures, more or less sympathetic spirits, old witches or giant ogres. These yokai have since gained visibility in manga and anime, but they almost disappeared as a result of the forced modernization of the country in the 19th century. Like many European countries, some scholars concerned about such a loss begin to list the legends before they are forgotten. Paradoxically, the one who initiated this movement and ran campaigns to collect and preserve these texts was a foreigner, an Irishman who fell in love with the country on his arrival in 1890.
